The Town Council

Bodmin Town Council was formed as a result of the local government reorganisation in the mid 1970s.

The Council serves a town population of around 15,600 and is strategically placed on the conflux of the A30 and A38 in the geographical centre of Cornwall.  The town has excellent connectivity with a range of cycling trails, most notably the Camel Trail and the Lanhydrock and Cardinham Woods cycle hubs.

The Town Council liaises with the principal authority for the area (Cornwall Council) and provides a range of services to the local community and the large number of tourists who visit the town every year. A total of 16 Councillors (7 representing St Mary’s & St Leonard Ward, 2 representing St Lawrence Ward, and 7 representing St Petroc’s Ward) are elected to serve on the Town Council for a term of 4 years.

Each year the Council elects one of their number to be the Mayor who acts as a Civic Leader and chairs Full Council Meetings.  The Mayor Choosing ceremony is held on the third Thursday in May each year and is a colourful civic occasion steeped in history.

When we meet

Full Council meets every two months.  Meetings are held in the Shire House Suite and there is a 15 minute open discussion period at the start of each meeting to enable members of the public to ask questions of the Council and raise awareness on various matters of interest.  This part of the meeting is itemised on agendas as ‘Public representation session.’

In addition to the Full Council Meetings, the Council has 4 main ‘Standing’ Committees who meet according to the Council Calendar to ensure the effective management of its business. These Committees are:

  • Policy & Resources
  • Planning
  • Community Services
  • Estates

Elected Members also represent the Town Council on a number of outside committees and community groups. More information can be found on each Councillor’s profile.

The Shire Hall in Bodmin

Where we are

The Council’s administrative team are located in the Shire Hall, a Grade II* listed building on Mount Folly (circa 1837) and which was formerly the County Assize Court.  The building also houses the Bodmin Information Centre and is the Town Council’s reception.  The Council also employs a number of staff who work in the Parks Team, to manage the parks and open spaces (including play areas and cemeteries) under the control, ownership and stewardship of Bodmin Town Council. Find out more about the town’s open spaces.

Bodmin is steeped in a rich history which is reflected throughout the town with a number of historical and listed buildings taking prominence in key locations.  The town’s historic core is included in a Conservation Area to preserve traditional buildings of historical interest for future generations.  St. Petroc’s Church is the largest parish church in the Cornwall and is a striking Grade I listed church overlooking Church Square.

Bodmin enjoys a strong and long standing relationship with the armed services and bestowed the freedom of the town on both the RAF and The Rifles (the latter being the reaffirmation of the Freedom of the Town as the most recent successor regiment to the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry).
